Prior to encountering Christ, John Wimber had experienced tremendous sccess in the secular music industry as a musician and an arranger. With two hit singles in the US top ten, he was converted and subsequently forsook the prestige to serve the Lord.
Twenty years ago, the Vineyard movement found its origins in a little Bible study in Yorba Linda, California when a group of broken, hungry people cried out for more of the Lord in song. John Wimber, founder of the Vineyard movement, told the Lord that he would gladly give worship a central place in the ministry the Lord gave him.
Without compromising his dedication to exemplary music recording and production, John went on to form Mercy Records, which would chronicle the evolution of worship in the Vineyard movement. That modest label has since become Vineyard Music Group. Since its beginning 20 years ago, worship and compassion have been the planks of ministry in the Vineyard and Vineyard Music Group is doing its best to pass on that rich heritage.
As we experience the phases of worship, we experience intimacy with God, the highest and most fulfilling calling men and women may know. John Wimber.
The Birth of Worship in the Vineyard:
John and I had been Christians only a few months. We were broke and Christmas was coming. John had laid down his musical career because Jesus asked him to. After refusing a lucrative offer to arrange a Christmas album, he quietly put down the phone. As I watched, John went to the cupboards, closets and the piano bench. He gathered a lifetime of work and talent and placed it in big cardboard boxes and we drove to the Yorba Linda dump. As he pushed the last box out of the station wagon and it sunk into the garbage, John 12:24 came to my mind.
Except a grain of wheat fall into the earth and die, it remains alone, but if it dies it bears much fruit.
In my heart I know that was when worship was born in the Vineyard. Carol Wimber
More Love, More Power is dedicated to the memory of John Wimber (1934-1997)
