Sing with all your joy!

Day 1 of the ”Why We Worship” conference in Johannesburg, South Africa

Some of the technical team stayed up all night to get the sound set up, so they were looking a little jaded by the time the delegates started arriving and registering. Brent Helming led the first set, which lasted just over an hour, and really got everyone into worship mode. The worship team is quite large, and has members from several different Vineyards around the country, but they played together extremely well.

After lunch we really got into the “local flavour”, with worship being led by Silulama “Slu” Maphongwane, who decided to “add some colour” (his words) to the worship, with songs in African languages as well. The English portion of “Culani/Sing/Binang” goes:


Let us come together and celebrate
Let us come together and sing His praises
Let us come and shout and shout with all our joy

Sing (sing) Sing along for Jesus
Sing (sing) Sing along His praises
Sing (sing)
Sing with all Your joy

We really got into it, and also did an African reggae style version of the David Ruis song “Every Move I Make” which David wrote on a visit to South Africa in 1996. Another highlight of the set was the song “Moving with the Lamb” which is a wonderful mellow song that flows along and expresses a real sense of intimacy with God.

The evening set was led by Rita Springer and Slu, and we did the “Culani/Sing/Binang” song again, with even more enthusiasm, ululation, and clapping. Slu’s spontaneous prayers and praises led us into “You”, the song Rita co-wrote with Craig Musseau:


In every country
In every nation
From many tribes
In all of creation

Someone is bowing
Someone is dancing
Someone is worshipping You

By that stage of the evening the presence of God was so powerful that I just wept, with tears streaming down my cheeks and feeling so overwhelmed by God that I could hardly sing. It wasn’t the first time that day, and I suspect that I will be shedding many more tears by the time the conference is over.
