Tuesday 9th March saw a Vineyard Cafe event in Johannesburg, South Africa, as a preliminary event to the Why We Worship conference.
by Donn Edwards
It was a real treat to attend a Vineyard Cafe evening on Tuesday with Brent Helming and Joe Randeen. It wasnt the first Vineyard Cafe to be held in South Africa, but it was the first time to have people who have recorded one of the CDs playing. Despite jet lag, Brent played like a pro,
and with songs like Jesus Lead On, You Shelter Me and Your Beloved it was easy to enter into worship. It wasnt long before the the presence of
the Holy Spirit was felt by most of the audience.
Brent sang and played acoustic guitar, and Joe accompanied him on a single drum, sometimes playing softly, and sometimes really going for broke. Brent started a new song about the joy we can experience in serving the Lord, and his enthusiasm was too much for one of his guitar strings. Completely unphased he replaced the string and we started the song again, without losing the momemntum of worship. I hope we do that song again during the conference, because it is going to be awesome.
In chatting to people afterwards, including other musicians, we all agreed that the hour or so of worship was wonderful, and that we had been privileged to be part of a real time of drawing close to Jesus. Worship is always a privilege, and it was an added pleasure to take part in worship when the songs we know and love are being played by their original author.
The Weltevreden Methodist church in Johannesburg has a Sunday evening service called The Ontological Shift Cafe which is similar in some respects to the Vineyard Cafe concept. I didnt know what ontological was, let alone how to spell it. Even so, they hosted the evening, and it was a great time to dwell together in unity and learn from brothers and sisters in the Lord.
